Post-Op Instructions for IV Sedation

1. Rest:

  • Take It Easy: After IV sedation, rest for the remainder of the day. Avoid strenuous activities and do not operate any machinery, including driving, for at least 24 hours or until fully alert.

2. Diet:

  • Hydration: Drink plenty of clear fluids to stay hydrated. Avoid hot drinks until the numbness has completely worn off to prevent burns.

  • Eating: Start with soft foods. Avoid chewy, hard, or spicy foods that might irritate the surgery site. Do not eat anything until the numbness in your mouth wears off.

3. Medication:

  • Pain Management: Take any prescribed pain medications as directed. If you are not prescribed any specific medication, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers, following the package instructions.

  • Follow Instructions: Follow any specific medication directions provided by your dentist or surgeon, including antibiotics if prescribed.

4. Oral Hygiene:

  • Gentle Care: Do not rinse your mouth for the first 24 hours. After that, gently rinse with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) after meals to keep the area clean.

  • Brushing and Flossing: Be gentle around the surgery site when brushing and flossing your teeth.

5. Follow-Up Care:

  • Attend Follow-Up Appointments: Return to your dentist or oral surgeon for a post-operative check-up as advised.

  • Monitor for Complications: Contact your dentist if you experience unusual symptoms such as excessive bleeding, severe pain, persistent swelling, or signs of infection.

6. Activity:

  • Gradual Increase: Gradually increase your activity level as tolerated. Listen to your body and rest when needed.

7. Smoking and Alcohol:

  • Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Do not smoke for at least 24 hours as smoking can hinder the healing process. Alcohol should also be avoided, especially if you are taking prescription pain medications.
