Post-Op Instructions for Oral Sedation
1. Rest:
Take It Easy: After oral sedation, you should rest for the remainder of the day. The effects of the sedative may linger, so avoid any strenuous activities and do not operate machinery or drive until you are fully alert and it is safe to do so.
2. Supervision:
Adult Supervision: Ensure that you have an adult to accompany you home and stay with you for at least the first few hours after the procedure until you are fully alert.
3. Diet:
Hydration: Drink plenty of clear fluids to stay hydrated. Avoid using straws as the suction can disturb healing sites.
Eating: Begin with soft and easy-to-chew foods. Avoid hot foods and beverages until the numbness in your mouth wears off to prevent burns. Gradually reintroduce normal foods as tolerated.
4. Medication:
Pain Management: Follow your dentist’s instructions regarding taking any prescribed medications, including pain relievers and antibiotics. Over-the-counter pain relievers can also be used as directed.
Adherence to Prescription: Take all medications as prescribed and complete any antibiotic courses.
5. Oral Hygiene:
Mouth Rinsing: Do not rinse your mouth on the day of the surgery. The day after surgery, you can gently rinse with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) after meals to keep the area clean.
Brushing and Flossing: Be gentle around the surgery site when brushing and flossing your other teeth.
6. Follow-Up Care:
Appointments: Make sure to attend any follow-up appointments as scheduled to ensure proper healing.
Monitor for Complications: Be alert for any signs of excessive bleeding, severe pain, swelling, or signs of infection, and contact your dentist if you experience any of these symptoms.
7. Activity:
Resume Activities Gradually: Gradually increase your activity level as you feel up to it. Avoid bending, lifting, or strenuous exercise until cleared by your dentist.
8. Smoking and Alcohol:
Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Do not smoke for at least 24 hours after your procedure as it can severely affect the healing process. Avoid alcohol while taking medications, especially narcotics or sedatives.
