Pre-op Instructions for Oral Sedation

Oral sedation in dentistry is a popular method for managing anxiety during dental procedures. It typically involves taking a prescribed sedative pill before your appointment. Here are common pre-operative instructions for patients undergoing a dental procedure with oral sedation:

  1. Medication Instructions:

    • Take one pill a night before the surgery (before bed)

    • Take two pills 1 hour before the surgery

  2. No food or drink 6 hours before procedure (water while taking pills is fine)

  3. If taking sedation make sure you are not pregnant or breastfeeding

  4. After taking the medication, you will experience dizziness or drowsiness, that is a normal reaction

  5. Accompaniment: You must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from the dental office. The effects of the sedative can impair your ability to drive safely and make decisions, so you will also need someone to stay with you for a few hours after the procedure until the effects fully wear off.

  6. Clothing: Wear loose and comfortable clothing to your appointment. Choose a top with sleeves that can easily be rolled up in case your healthcare provider needs access to your arms for any reason.

  7. Health Updates: Inform your dentist of any changes in your health or new medications you are taking. Some health conditions or medications can interact with sedatives, affecting your safety and the effectiveness of the sedation.

  8. No Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours before your procedure, as alcohol can significantly increase the effects of sedatives.

  9. Jewelry and Valuables: Remove all jewelry and avoid bringing valuables to the clinic to prevent them from getting lost or forgotten while you are sedated.

  10. Post-Procedure Care: Make sure you understand and have all the necessary information for post-procedure care. You may feel groggy and disoriented for several hours after the sedation; thus, it is important to have someone assist you at home.
